Life Cycle Thinking: How to Measure the Real Environmental Impact of a Product

When you’re trying to make more sustainable choices, it’s tempting to judge a product by a single feature.
Is it made from bamboo? Great.
Is it biodegradable? Even better.
Is the packaging recyclable? Perfect.
But sustainability is rarely that simple.
A product can be made from a renewable material and still have a significant environmental footprint. A recyclable product may never actually be recycled. And a product marketed as “eco-friendly” may require more energy, water, or resources to produce than you might expect.
So how can we make better decisions?
One of the most useful approaches is life cycle thinking: looking at the environmental impact of a product across its entire life, rather than focusing on just one characteristic.
What is life cycle thinking?
Life cycle thinking means considering what happens to a product from the moment its raw materials are obtained until the product is eventually discarded, recycled, composted, or otherwise reaches the end of its useful life.
A simplified product life cycle looks something like this:
Raw materials → Manufacturing → Transportation → Use → End of life
Every stage can have environmental consequences.
For example, consider something as ordinary as a household cleaning product.
Its environmental footprint may involve:
- The extraction or cultivation of its ingredients
- The energy used to manufacture it
- The materials used for its container
- The packaging around it
- Transportation from manufacturer to retailer
- How much product is required per use
- Whether the container can be reused or recycled
- What happens to the remaining product and packaging afterward
Looking at only one of those factors can give us an incomplete picture.
Why “eco-friendly” isn’t a complete answer
The term “eco-friendly” sounds reassuring, but by itself it doesn’t tell us very much.
A product might be made from a natural material, for example, while still involving intensive farming, significant transportation, chemical processing, or short product life.
Likewise, a product made from recycled material may be environmentally preferable in some respects, but its overall impact will also depend on how it is manufactured, how long it lasts, and what happens when it is no longer useful.
This doesn’t mean that materials, manufacturing methods, or packaging don’t matter.
They absolutely do.
It means we need to look at the whole picture.
That is the central idea behind life cycle thinking.
The five stages of a product’s life
1. Raw materials
Every physical product starts somewhere.
Materials may come from forests, farms, mines, oceans, or petroleum-based resources.
The environmental questions include:
- Is the resource renewable or finite?
- How much land or water does it require?
- Does obtaining it damage ecosystems?
- Is the material responsibly sourced?
- Are harmful chemicals involved?
- Can the material be regenerated or replenished?
This is where concepts such as renewable resources, recycled materials, responsible forestry, regenerative agriculture, and resource extraction become important.
But even renewable resources aren’t automatically impact-free.
“Renewable” means a resource can be replenished. It doesn’t necessarily mean that extracting or growing it has no environmental consequences.
2. Manufacturing
Raw materials usually have to be processed before they become a finished product.
Manufacturing can involve:
- Electricity
- Heat
- Water
- Chemicals
- Machinery
- Packaging
- Waste materials
The energy source matters too.
Manufacturing powered by renewable electricity can have a different carbon footprint from otherwise identical manufacturing powered predominantly by fossil fuels.
This is one reason it can be misleading to judge sustainability based solely on what a product is made from.
Material matters. Manufacturing matters.
Both are part of the story.
3. Transportation
Once a product has been manufactured, it needs to get somewhere.
It may travel through several stages before reaching your home:
Factory → distribution centre → warehouse → retailer → customer
Transportation creates emissions, although its overall contribution to a product’s environmental footprint varies considerably depending on the product, distance, transportation method, weight, and other factors.
This is also why “locally made” doesn’t automatically equal “more sustainable.”
A locally produced product can still have a large environmental footprint if it uses resource-intensive materials or has a very short useful life.
Conversely, a product manufactured farther away may have characteristics that reduce its overall impact.
Again, the important principle is to look at the entire life cycle rather than one attractive claim.
4. The use phase
This is the stage consumers often overlook.
What happens while you actually own and use the product?
Some products have relatively little environmental impact during use.
Others can consume substantial amounts of:
- Electricity
- Water
- Cleaning products
- Replacement parts
- Batteries
- Other consumables
And then there is one of the most important sustainability factors of all:
How long does the product last?
A product that lasts for ten years may be preferable to one that needs replacing every year—even if the second product initially appears to be the greener choice.
This is why durability is such an important part of sustainable consumption.
The environmental impact of making a product is effectively repeated every time you throw it away and replace it.
5. End of life
Eventually, most products reach the end of their useful life.
But “throwing something away” doesn’t necessarily mean the story ends there.
Depending on the product and local infrastructure, it might be:
- Reused
- Repaired
- Resold
- Recycled
- Composted
- Incinerated
- Sent to landfill
This is where sustainability claims can become particularly confusing.
A product may technically be recyclable without actually being recycled.
A compostable product may require a commercial composting facility rather than a backyard compost.
A biodegradable material may break down under some conditions but persist much longer under others.
End-of-life claims need context.
The infrastructure available where you live can be just as important as the material itself.
Life cycle assessment: the science behind the idea
You may come across the term Life Cycle Assessment, or LCA.
Life Cycle Assessment is a structured method used to evaluate the environmental impacts associated with a product, process, or service across its life cycle.
Depending on the assessment, this can include factors such as:
- Greenhouse gas emissions
- Energy use
- Water use
- Resource consumption
- Land use
- Pollution
- Waste
An LCA can help researchers, manufacturers, policymakers, and consumers understand trade-offs that aren’t obvious from looking at a product on a store shelf.
Importantly, an LCA isn’t simply a measure of a product’s carbon footprint.
Carbon is important, but sustainability is broader than carbon alone.
A product can have relatively low greenhouse gas emissions while creating other environmental pressures, such as water consumption, land impacts, pollution, or resource depletion.
That’s why thinking in terms of a product’s environmental footprint can be more useful than focusing on a single metric.
There is rarely a perfect product
Life cycle thinking doesn’t mean we need to find products with zero environmental impact.
Those products generally don’t exist.
Instead, it helps us recognize trade-offs.
For example:
A material might be renewable but require substantial water.
A product might be extremely durable but difficult to recycle.
A package might be recyclable but contain virgin material.
A product might be lightweight and efficient to transport but have a shorter lifespan.
The goal isn’t necessarily to find the perfect product.
It’s to make better-informed choices.
A simple life cycle checklist for your next purchase
You don’t need to conduct a scientific Life Cycle Assessment every time you buy something.
Instead, ask a few simple questions.
1. What is it made from?
Look beyond words such as “natural” or “green.”
Find out what materials are actually being used.
2. Where did those materials come from?
Are they renewable, recycled, responsibly sourced, or finite?
3. How was it made?
Consider manufacturing methods, energy use, water use, and potentially harmful chemicals.
4. How long will it last?
Durability can be one of the most important sustainability characteristics of a product.
5. Can it be repaired or reused?
A product that can remain useful longer generally avoids the need to manufacture a replacement.
6. What happens when you’re finished with it?
Can it be reused, recycled, composted, or otherwise responsibly managed?
And importantly, is that option actually available where you live?
7. Do you need to buy it at all?
This may be the most important question.
The most sustainable product isn’t always a different product.
Sometimes it’s the product you already own.
Look beyond the label
Sustainable shopping doesn’t have to mean becoming an environmental scientist.
It simply means becoming a little more curious.
Instead of asking:
“Is this product eco-friendly?”
try asking:
“What is the environmental story of this product from beginning to end?”
That small change in thinking can lead to much better decisions.
